2023

We started coming to Acadia in 2000. First camping, and then when Leslie decided that I no longer liked to rough it, we started to rent cabins.

Location, location, location. Hall Quarry (Command Post) is our favorite location of the 5 cabins that we have stayed in. The view, the deer, the frogs in the “pond” are all special.

Rick and Mimi are not “landlords”. They are now our friends.

The Command Post is perfect. The first year that we stayed there, I suggested sun blocking curtains as being close to the eastern part of the time zone, the sunrise is early.

When we returned the following year, there were sun blocking curtains.

The guest boat rides are really entertaining. We once saw a bald eagle chase an osprey for a fish in its talons. Naturalist Rick explained that the Osprey is better at catching fish than an eagle. The eagles wait for the osprey to catch a fish and then chase the osprey.

Interesting tidbit.

We highly recommend Hall Quarry Rentals and we hope to keep on returning for many years! ~ M Levine. via HQRentals Website

“We have been coming to Hall Quarry Rentals for over 10 years.  Our trip 8/13/22 – 8/27/22 was, as usual, something near heaven.  Accommodations, hospitality of our hosts, views, and weather could not have been more perfect.  We have stayed many times in Deer Track and in 2022 we were at Command Post.  Looking forward to another two weeks in this beautiful place in 2023 at Command Post.” ~ J. We could not have asked for anything better. The place was clean, warm, and placed in a perfect spot to enjoy all views. I’ve stayed in different properties in the Hall Quarry area for many years but the Command Post was by far my favorite. The place was impeccable clean and well kept. So much attention was given to utilizing every inch of space and I really appreciated all the storage. The water views are spectacular and I loved waking up every morning to that view! There’s a full kitchen which is great if you want to stay in and cook. I loved having a washer & dryer as well. The cottage is well insulated with a propane fire place that kept the place cozy on the colder nights. All the furniture is very comfortable. I can’t think of a single amenity that I would have wanted that was not already provided. I didn’t get to meet Mimi personally, but she was always available by phone or email and was lovely to work with! I hope to come back someday but it’s so popular that it’s hard to get. I couldn’t have asked for a better stay! ~ S. Ludwug via VRBO Oct, 2020

We had a fabulous stay at the Command Post and Mimi is a wonderful host. Very clean, beautiful views, and a short drive to Acadia - what more could you ask for?! ~ L. Bird via Airbnb Sept. 2020

We rented the Command Post for 1 week in July, and we absolutely loved it. The rental was very clean, the property was beautiful, and we loved being able to see sailboats, wildlife, or the milky way from inside or on the deck. Although on the "quiet side" of the island, logistically the location was still perfect- we were pretty much within 20 minutes of any location on the entire island. We would highly recommend this rental, and I am looking forward to staying here again! ~ C. Hessel via VRBO, Aug. 2020

2019

The house was impeccable. The owners were great. The house is perfectly located, a short drive from every spot on the island. It is in a quiet area without the traffic and crowds of Bar Harbor, but centrally located so that you have easy access to get there. It is also allows you the option to explore some of the “less popular”, but still beautiful parts of Acadia. I would recommend this house to anyone heading that way. ~ L. Ritz via HomeAway Aug. 17, 2019

***********************************************************************************

Command Post is a perfect cottage for two people. We spent a week there in late June 2019. The location is ideal for exploring both sides of the island while staying on the quieter, Western side. Mimi and her husband Rick are very friendly and helpful. We took their offer of a complementary 2-hour boat ride on the Somes Sound and had a wonderful experience (bald eagles, seals). The views from the front deck are breathtaking so if you are there just to relax with a glass of wine, Command Post is a place for you. We will be back! ~ J. Nycak via HomeAway June 22, 2019

We had a great stay at the Command Post. The house was very clean and we had all of the amenities we needed. The deck and the view of the sound were amazing. Mimi was also very helpful. We hope to return again next year. I highly recommend! ~ Pete via Airbnb June 2019

Our stay at the Command Post was absolutely amazing! It really is far more beautiful than the pictures show! Acadia is one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been. The back deck was great to relax and enjoy the view of the rolling mountains, Somes Sound, and even white tailed deer than would come within feet of the deck! On the inside it was decorated very rustic that gave that New England feel. Our great host MiMi even gave us a tour of the beautiful Somes Sound on her boat! It truly was an experience I’ll never forget and I recommend staying at the Command Post to anyone! ~B, Kane and India via Airbnb 6/8/2019

LOVE LOVE LOVE

We absolutely loved The Command Post! We will definitely be returning for more hiking! We brought our two dogs and they loved it, too!! The cabin is so cozy and relaxing!! Wish we could have stayed longer!! Mimi is fantastic. She stopped by to say hello and introduce herself. Her mom is very sweet as well!! The view from the cabin spectacular!! The night sky is amazing - millions of stars that are so bright!! The cabin is close to everything. It is only a short drive to the other side of the island. We hiked Acadia Mtn and Gorham Mtn with the dogs! Amazing!! We drove to the top of Cadillac Mtn for the sunset - spectacular! We went to so many places! We want to come back and do the hikes that dogs cannot go on. One of our favorite beaches is Little Hunters Beach - the rocks are so unique! Can't take any rocks from the beach though!! We met people from several different states and some from different countries. In November, some shops are closed, but we still found a lot of shops to play tourists for a day!! We cannot wait to visit MDI again!!! Thank you, Mimi, for everything!! ~ T. Quinn via HomeAway Nov. 2018

The perfect location for exploring Acadia

We loved The Command Post. It was the perfect location for our week on Mt. Desert Island. We came to Acadia to hike, and were able to complete a great many of the hikes that the park has to offer. At the end of a long day of hiking, The Command Post was a comfortable place to come home to. We cooked our evening meal each night in the well appointed kitchen, and enjoyed the gas stove on the chilliest of mornings. The furnishings were comfortable, and the location made it easy to get to the various hikes, and it is a pleasure to be able to avoid the crowds in Bar Harbor. The views are amazing, and we only wish it had been warmer so we could enjoy the deck and shore. My only suggestion, and it is a minor one, is that the mattress could use replacing. Everything else about the cabin was perfect and I wouldn't change a thing!~ C. Samuelson via HomeAway Oct. 2018

Perfect vacation getaway!

After a busy day of hiking in Acadia, or exploring bustling Bar Harbor, nothing can beat a relaxing drink on the deck watching the boats on Somes Sound, or viewing the amazing night sky. Command Post has all the amenities that you’d need for a relaxing getaway. From the well-stocked kitchen, to the washer and dryer, the cottage is immaculate! The nicest place that we’ve rented in the area. ~ P. Brannick via HomeAway Oct 22, 2018

Great views, spotless, great people

Lovely cottage, well equipped, amazing views, ok for pets. Only wish there was a way to close the openings on the deck, and maybe a railing. Minor issues compared to the spotless, well-equipped, lovely cottage and friendly folks. ~ D. Cairns via HomeAway June 9, 2018

We were here for 7 days on our honeymoon and the Command Post was absolutely Perfect! The views are breath taking! It's close to the parks and Bar Harbor. Everything was perfect.  Hoping to come back:  This cottage on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island was perfect. It was close enough to all the activities that we wanted to do every day, but we also enjoyed the privacy and the peace and quiet of being removed from the crowds. We enjoyed our coffee out on the deck every morning listening to the birds and watching the boats down on Somes Sound. We saw bald eagles flying over several times. We also saw deer every day. The cottage was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed. There is plenty of closet space for storing all your stuff. The furniture was all very comfortable. Owners Mimi and Rick were great sources of information about local Hiking, things to do and places to eat. In fact, there is a binder of information right in the cottage that includes all the information you would need to know to enjoy your stay. We were wishing that we had brought our fishing gear as it would've been great to fish off the dock down on the sound. You were able to put our kayaks into the Sound right from the dock. There is also a boat launch on a nearby lake about a half mile away. We were just a few minutes away from the Carriage Roads for bike riding. We were also surrounded by many options for Hiking. We hated to have to leave!!  ~D & R Vinciguerra., HomeAway, Sept. 2017

Cozy Couples GetAway “Castle Cottage on a Hill”:  My wife and I visited Acadia for the first time and spent a week in August (2017) at Command Post. And the experience was pleasantly special. (And we are picky, world travelers). Firstly Command Post was super clean and fresh smelling and feeling. HIGHLIGHTS - Bed was super comfy. - Cottage had all we needed lobster pot to steam and eat lobster, binoculars - Layout of the footage was terrific as you can walk through the place room to room easily, - Wrap around outside desk was terrifically convenience - Views of Somes Sound and Acadia mountains were spectacular. Matter of fact we watched the solar eclipse from the back deck as well as a sailboat regatta. NOTE: There is an inside "gas fired fireplace stove" and not a traditional wood stove. UNIQUE BOAT RIDES & LOCAL INSIGHTS Mimi and Rick (Maine natives) could not be more friendly as Rick invited us out lobstering and we witnessed this Maine tradition and fishery first hand (not to mention the amazingly fresh lobster he provided us at super reasonable (below market rates) rates, we ate 14 lobsters + local steamers, clams thru the week!!!). Also Mimi and Rick kindly invited us out on a sunset cheese and cracker cruise of which we experienced seeing 2 bald eagles, 2 harbor seals, and 2 porpoises feeding on a school of mackerel. Rick knows all the fine details of the homes and community. Mimi can tell you all the fine details of where to go on the "quiet side" like where to find fresh popovers nearby LOCATION The location of the cottage is superbly convenient being no more than 25 minutes to any Acadia / Mount Desert Island destinations. NEARBY ATTRACTIONS Most attractions were closer like minutes away....including Echo Lake boat launch (for stand up paddle boarding, fishing boats or kayaks), as well as the Rouge Cafe (delicious and innovative locally sourced dishes), SW harbor (shops, and ferry to Cranberry Islands), Bass Harbor Lighthouse, Acadia Rep Theatre and the Beech Hill Farm Stand (run by the College of the Atlantic) and has delicious local veggies and ice cream. OVERALL Our week @ Command Post was a relaxing, fun and a cozy lobster filled experience. WE WILL BE BACK!  ~ A. Grazioso., via HomeAway, Aug. 31, 2017

***********************************************************************************

Our stay at the Command Post was perfection. The location is fantastic - quiet with a wonderful view of Somes Sound and close to Southwest Harbor; the Command Post itself offered everything we needed and was clean and inviting; and Mimi was a fantastic and very responsive host. What more could we ask for? Waking up to the morning sun reflecting off the water simply can't be beat, and if there wasn't so much to do and explore, we could have spent the entire week reading books on the wonderful deck. We hope to be back! ~ R. MacEwan via  Airbnb, August 2017

“We would definitely return to The Command Post. The location was great with beautiful views of the sound. Points in Acadia National Park were just a short drive away. Our hosts were great, allowing us to use their kayaks and they even took us in their boat for a little tour of the sound. ” ~ D. Alker, Airbnb, July 2017

Great Property in a wonderful location:  I spent 4 wonderful days at the Command Post in early May. My expectations were exceeded! It’s a serene location overlooking Somes Sound. It’s well situated on the “quiet side”, just north of quaint Southwest Harbor. Bar Harbor is a quick 15-minute drive. The large bedroom picture window faces towards the east so each morning you’re greeted by a sunrise over the mountains & sound. If you’re looking for tranquility this is the place to be. The house itself is very comfortable, cozy and importantly…. spotless. It’s obvious that Mimi & Rick take great pride in offering a clean and well maintained home with many thoughtful touches and little details that make a difference. There are comfortable lounge chairs, a bedroom bench, and towel hooks & additional light switches that are conveniently located. The kitchen appliances and laundry machines are spotless and look new. The bathroom (toilet, shower, vanity) are all super clean and well maintained. The carpeting is soft & clean. Again it’s the details that make a “rental” feel more like your home while visiting. I’m very particular when it comes to rental homes, hotels, etc. Without any hesitation I would highly recommend the Command Post if you’re looking for a quite location, great views and a cozy, comfortable and clean home from which to explore Mount Desert Island! Command Post Keeps Us Coming Back Every Year:  There is nothing not to love about Command Post and we go back year after year. The view of Somes Sound, and the mountain beyond, is just gorgeous -- views are great from the living room or from the deck. You can lie in bed and watch the stars and then watch the sun rise over Somes Sound. The Mooers family is so very friendly and incredibly welcoming and they keep Command Post in top notch condition and always clean and tidy as can be. It's a quick drive to anywhere fun in Acadia National Park or into Bar Harbor for dinner. This is a truly special place owned by very special people. ~ C. Hayden via HomeAway, Nov. 5, 2016

“The Command Post was even better than the photos! Immaculately clean and more spacious than we anticipated. The views of the water were perfect. We loved that it was set away from the busy towns but still very close to everything on the island. It was great to come in from hiking Acadia Park to a private, relaxing evening on the porch or by the fire. It was perfect for my husband and I to have relaxing week away!”  K. Oakes via Airbnb October 2016

We needed some time to decompress and rest after some difficult life circumstances, and the Command Post was the perfect place to do this. It was an ideal location from which to adventure, and adventure we did! Hiking and biking all over Acadia. Command Post was well-maintained and spotlessly clean. Mimi was a gracious host. We found the place exactly as advertised. ~ J. Madden via Airbnb Sept. 2016

My husband, Matt and I had the great pleasure of staying at the Command Post with our 4 year old, mix breed dog (hiking buddy), Shelby. Over the past 25 years we’ve visited the island at least ten times, both before and after getting the dog. Anyone traveling in Maine with a pet can attest to the challenges of finding pet friendly accommodations without some degree of sacrifice of location, cleanliness, convenience, or comfort. The Command Post excels in all those categories. The cottage overlooks Somes Sound on the Southwest side of the island, just a few miles from Southwest Harbor and about twenty minutes to Bar Harbor. The entire back of the house is window lined, overlooking the Sound. When we arrived we caught the tail end of a sail boat race from the wrap around deck. The bedroom at the back of the home provides an exceptional view. Twice I got up in the middle of the night to marvel at the innumerable stars and their reflection off the water and wishing I had taken a photography class. Any of the pleasures that draw travelers to Mount Desert Island are easily accessible. The Command Post provided our favorite stay on the island. Even if you have no pet, I strongly recommend it. On a final note, our hosts, Mimi and Rick were friendly, helpful, welcoming and non-intrusive. It was a pleasure dealing with them. We look forward to seeing them again. ~ M. Fritzer via Airbnb Sept. 2016

***********************************************************************************

The Command Post is unbelievable! Quiet location 15/20 mins to Bar Harbor, fantastic hiking and gorgeous view of Somes Sound. Very peaceful area, wonderful to come home to every day. The stars at night blew us away. We cooked most of our meals there and had everything we needed including a lobster pot. There are TVs and great wi-fi but we never turned the TV on the entire time we were there. The sleeping conditions were ideal and the bed was super. We would've loved to stay a month. Mimi and Rick are nice and welcoming, fun to talk to and very knowledgable about the area. We hope to be back!   K. Bondurant via Airbnb, Aug. 2016

Idyllic setting, great view, well-equipped cottage:  Captain's Quarters is a small house, perfectly located overlooking Somes Sound in the Hall Quarry area of Mt. Desert Island, just north of Southwest Harbor on the "quiet side" of the island. The facility is well equipped and comfortable, with a new bathroom, full kitchen, nice living room/dining room, and bedroom. There are wrap-around decks to allow for taking advantage of the views, which are spectacular. The hosts, Rick and Mimi Mooers, do everything one can think of to make your stay as comfortable as possible. They've thought of every detail and equipped the cottage amply with all the equipment and supplies needed to insure a great stay. I highly recommend either this cottage, Captain's Quarters, or any other one maintained by the Mooers, as you will have a great time, and never be disappointed. ~ R. Beautiful cottage with waterfront views and access:  Love at first sight for this beautifully kept cottage with all conveniences, including washer/dryer & dishwasher. Wraparound porch looks out on Somes Sound--spent many hours reading and watching boats, birds, and deer go by. Kept our kayak at the owners' dock, and had fresh cooked lobster brought to our door by their son. Hall Quarry location is perfect--everything on MDI is easily accessible. The owners are terrific and will help with anything you need--we have been coming back for 5 years and have booked for this coming summer. Highest recommendation! ~J. The Command Post is the perfect location for a quiet stay on MDI, a quick drive to Acadia and Bar Harbor where we spent much of our time when we weren't relaxing at the cottage. Mimi and her family made us feel welcomed and comfortable, beginning with our initial communication. Our dog, the biggest hiker of our family, was welcome and enjoyed her stay as much as we did. We were nervous about our first Airbnb stay, but the Command Post exceeded our expectations. The cottage was clean, the furniture was comfortable (especially the bed and pillows) and the view on the porch deck can't be beat. We will be a return renter, for sure.  ~ M. “We had wonderful time in late March at The Command Post. The cabin is perfect and has everything you would need. The views are spectacular and the setting is quiet and peaceful. Incredibly easy access to everything on the island, there are great hiking trails within a 10 minute drive! There is plenty of information provided in the cabin by Maria, which makes it very easy to get acquainted with the island. The cabin was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. A real highlight is the fantastic number of windows and great views you can enjoy while sitting on the comfortable couches with warmth from the gas fireplace. Kitchen was extremely well equipped and all the appliances worked well. Bathroom was great too with good water pressure, and linens/towels provided. If you need peace, tranquility, and to experience the nature Maine has to offer, this is the place to be! The Commad Post is very clean, cute and cozy, but plenty of room for my husband and I along with our 2 dogs. Upon first entering the cottage, we were struck by the spectacular view of Somes Sound and the surrounding mountains which you can see from just about every room.....the pictures on the web site just can't capture the beauty! In addition to enjoying the many activities MDI and Acadia have to offer, we especially liked viewing the wildlife from the deck (deer, red squirrel, woodpecker, and hummingbird) and on the boat ride of Somes Sound (seals, Dolphins, osprey, cormorants, loons, and a bald eagle). At night MDI really puts on a show with all the stars supporting the main draw, the Milky Way. Thanks to Mimi, Rick, and Sharon for your warm hospitality and for making our visit so memorable....a perfect way for "newlyretireds" to begin this chapter in our lives.   ~ Marcia P. Our family has made the Command Post our home away from home!!! We have stayed at the Command Post multiple times since 2010. We have traveled with our two dogs and more recently with our little boy! I can't begin to tell you how enjoyable our experiences have been! The Command Post is truly the most peaceful and tranquil place for us! Within a short distance from Acadia National Park's most beautiful sights, the Command Post is our resting spot as we take in all that Acadia has to offer. The views of Somes Sound from the deck of the Command Post is amazing! We awake to enjoy the sunrise above the mountains overlooking the Sound, so enjoy watching the boats glide over the water, and feel the ocean air blow in. We also love the sounds of the toads croaking in the small ponds amidst the quarry that surrounds it. The Command Post offers it all; all the luxuries and conveniences of a comfortable home, the spectacular views of Acadia area, and a truly tranquil place to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul! I would highly recommend this location for your next vacation spot! In addition to all of this, Mimi Mooers has always made sure that our stay is just perfect in every way! Our true home away from home!!!  ~K Strong. June 2014

We had an great time on MDI and in Acadia NP - despite the Government shutdown - Command Post was the perfect place to stay and the view of Somes Sound is spectacular. The house is small and mostly suited to two people. It is well designed and very well constructed. I don't think I'd feel a draft, even in the middle of winter. The views of the Sound and the surrounding property were highlighted by the large windows in the bedroom and living room, as well as the sliding glass doors in the living room. The house was very clean and well appointed with everything we could possibly have needed for our stay. There are neighbors, but their houses are a good distance away and seen just through the trees, so peace and quiet are virtually guaranteed. For a vacation house, it had everything we could ever have needed and lots of things we didn't even know we needed. The owners are very friendly and take wonderful care of the property. I'd definitely recommend the place to friends.  ~  Reilly  Oct. 2013
